Library Information

Customer Responsibilities

  1. Present your library card to borrow materials. Present your card to use the computers, if requested.
  2. Immediately report a lost or stolen library card. When obtaining a replacement card, bring photo identification. Parents requesting replacement cards for minors must show photo identification.
  3. Immediately report address changes, showing appropriate and required proof of the new address.
  4. Check out all materials on the Library's circulation system prior to exiting the building. The Library reserves the right to require persons entering or exiting the building to open and disclose the contents of any bags, purses, briefcases, and other containers which are being carried by or are in the possession of the persons.
  5. Ensure all materials borrowed are returned on time.
  6. Pay fines for overdue items. The Library reserves the right to block checkouts when fines exceed a set amount.
  7. Pay for loss or any damage of borrowed materials that results in replacement, repairs, cleaning or reprocessing.

Customer code of conduct

This code of conduct has been adopted for the comfort and protection of all those using the library. We ask for customer cooperation in maintaining a pleasant atmosphere conducive to the effective use of the library. Conduct that demonstrates appropriate decorum, respect and civility toward other library patrons; as well as library employees, volunteers and contractors is required at all times.

1. Code for parents

  1. Be responsible for what my children borrow, read, listen to, and view.
  2. Pick up my children by closing time. The police will be called if the child is not picked up by closing time.
  3. Ensure my children age 8 and under are attended at all times and that my children age 9 to 12 are not left unattended for more than 1 hour.

2. Code for computer resources and internet access

In accord with its commitment and continued efforts to provide access to informational, educational, cultural, and recreational resources and services for the community, the Fayetteville Public Library (“FPL”) makes available computer resources to patrons. In providing access to computer resources, the FPL supports the principles expressed in the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read, and Freedom to View statements, and adheres to relevant provisions of federal and state law.

All persons using the FPL's computer resources (“users”) must have a valid FPL library or visitors pass, and do hereby, agree to adhere to the following conduct code:

  1. Users are responsible for any damage caused to computer equipment/hardware and/or software.
  2. Users will respect and abide by copyright laws and licensing agreements.
  3. Users will not make any attempt to gain unauthorized access to restricted files or networks, or to damage or modify computer equipment or software.
  4. Users will comply with any time limitations on computer access/usage implemented by FPL staff.
  5. Users will respect the privacy of others and refrain from attempting to view or read materials being used/accessed by others.
  6. Users will not access “chat groups” or the equivalent.
  7. Users must save data only to diskette, compact disc or USB key. Data may not be saved to library hard drives.
  8. Users must establish a print payment account in order to print from computers. Refunds will not be given on account balances.
  9. Minors are only permitted to access filtered Internet stations.
  10. Users age 18 and older may request the use of unfiltered Internet for research purposes.
  11. Unsupervised users under age 12 may access workstations in the children's library only.
  12. Users under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult when accessing computers in areas of the library beyond the children's library.
  13. Only users age 12 and under may access computers in the Kid-Tech area of the children's library.
  14. Only users ages 12-18 may access computers in the Young Adult area.
  15. The FPL is not responsible for damage or loss caused by viruses.
  16. Users may access computers equipped with assistive technologies only if they have physical needs requiring these functions.
  17. Users must wear headphones for any programs requiring sound. Headphones may be purchased at information desks.
  18. Users are not permitted to engage in illegal activity; access illegal materials; access materials resulting, or which may result, in the disruption of library services (including the display of graphics either illegal or obscene according to local community standards); or allow the access by minors of “materials harmful to minors,” as defined by law.
  19. Users will terminate their computer session and leave the computer terminal area upon request by FPL staff.
  20. Users may have Internet and/or library privileges suspended or revoked for failing to comply with library policies and/or staff decisions.

Use of library computers is on a first come, first serve basis. Reservations are not available. There is a two-hour time limit for the total amount of computer access per day. Library staff may provide assistance to users of computer resources to the extent time and customer demand allows.

Use of computer resources, including the Internet, requires a responsibility of the user to evaluate the quality of information accessed. Although computers allow access to a broad array of excellent information, computers may also access information that can be inaccurate, outdated, inappropriate, offensive, and/or illegal. The availability of information and materials does not constitute endorsement of the content by the FPL. Access to, use of, or dissemination of information through the FPL's computer resources is the responsibility of the user.

3. Code for personal conduct. Examples of unacceptable behavior or activity include, but are not limited to:

  1. Leaving children age 8 and under unattended
  2. Leaving children ages 9 through 12 unattended for more than one hour
  3. Leaving children at the library after closing
  4. Use of library terraces by children under 13 without active supervision of a parent or adult guardian
  5. Leaving vulnerable adults unsupervised or unattended
  6. Cell phones and pagers must be turned to silent or vibrate. Use is limited to designated areas
  7. Listening to devices playing voice or music without headphones
  8. Smoking, soliciting , selling, skateboarding or skating, consuming intoxicants, intoxication, spitting, sleeping, loitering, petitioning or campaigning on premises*
  9. Leaving unattended items
  10. Annoying, harassing, or threatening another person
  11. Physical, sexual, or verbal abuse of another person
  12. Interfering with others' use of the library through poor personal hygiene
  13. Eating and/or drinking except in the café and library terrace on the first floor
  14. Leaving automobiles in the parking deck overnight or for extended periods when the library is closed
  15. Demonstrating or picketing inside the building or in such a way as to block access to the building
  16. Carrying weapons of any type
  17. Defacing, damaging, rearranging or stealing library or City of Fayetteville property
  18. Uttering profane, obscene, or injurious language
  19. Not following the library's “Computer Resources and Internet Access” policy
  20. Not wearing proper attire. Footwear, shirts/blouses and pants/skirts/dresses are required at all times
  21. Disturbing public peace by persistent loud, annoying or aggressive conduct
  22. Bringing animals into the building, except Seeing Eye dogs or by invitation for a program
  23. Tying-up dogs or cats on library property as per City of Fayetteville leash law ordinance
  24. Being in an unauthorized area of the library, or remaining in an area after its closing; staying in the building when requested to leave during emergency situations or drills
  25. Engaging in any activities while on Library premises that are not related to the proper use of the Library

    *Premises is defined as all property up to but not including the public sidewalk.
