Fayetteville Public Library is seeking a visionary DIRECTOR OF LIBRARY SERVICES to help lead a highly motivated staff in the delivery of transformational library services.   Reports directly to the Executive Director.


Hiring Range: $52,800-$63,400.

Overview:  Direct operations for youth, reference, genealogy, circulation and technical services departments as well as volunteer services and marketing/communication.  Help establish long-range, annual performance and budget goals for these departments. Understand customer requirements and consistently meet them with quality services, collection and programming.  Oversee all collection development, material purchases of approximately $370,000 annually, and inventory management. Assist in the direction of $25 million in library assets. Work with administrative team to monitor library operations and improve efficiency

Essential Duties:  All Library positions require the employee to provide excellent customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other Library employees (especially members of his or her own team), and have regular and reliable attendance that is not disruptive.  In addition, all supervisory positions require the employee to demonstrate leadership competencies by exhibiting appropriate role modeling and setting proper examples.  Other essential duties of this position include:

  1. Direct the adult services, youth services, technical services and circulation services departments as well as volunteer services and marketing/communication.
  2. Lead implementation of strategic plans and work with Executive Director, Director of Administrative Services and others to develop strategic goals and objectives.
  3. Initiate, plan and develop staff training modules.
  4. Write, evaluate, interpret and communicate library policies. Present policy recommendations, with Executive Director, to the Library Board of Trustees.
  5. Work as a member of the management team to evaluate and improve overall library functions, to resolve shared issues, and to craft, implement and interpret library policies and procedures.
  6. Assist Executive Director in managing book/material challenges in accordance with policy and best practice.
  7. Address local and state entities and the library board, as well as represent FPL to the public and the media using highest presentation skills.
  8. Monitor building security via key access to all areas, respond to emergencies and meet with police, as needed.
  9. With Executive Director and Director of Administrative Services, develop $3.6 million annual budget.
  10. Prepare and write reports. Analyze data, i.e. performance measures, vendor proposals, etc.
  11. Seek grant and award opportunities. Write proposals, complete applications and administer grants.
  12. Lead and attend staff meetings.
  13. Assume personal responsibility for building maintenance and solve minor issues and problems.
  14. Ensure customer privacy and confidentiality of customer information per Arkansas State Statute 13.2.7.
  15. Keep current with the library profession and provide gatekeeper responsibilities.
  16. Act on behalf of and fill in for the Executive Director, as needed.
  17. Lead response to emergency situations.
  18. Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum qualifications:
    • Master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited program
    • Four to ten years experience in the library field
    • Three years or more management experience in a reference/adult, youth, circulation or technical services department
