Allison Blevins

About

Allison Blevins is a poet and publisher who writes confessional free verse poetry and finds inspiration in both traditional and pop culture. She writes to confess her sins and connect with a world she feels largely disconnected from as a neurodiverse person and a person with a physical disability. Her work centers difference and queerness in a world that seeks to other, to push her to the margins. She uses hybrid techniques to open the boundaries of free verse. Her work lives in a space between poetry, flash nonfiction, and abstract art.

Project

During this residency, Allison will work on a book titled Where Will We Live When the House Burns Down?. This collection is somewhere between a novel-length prose poem and lyrical nonfiction. Working in a genre called speculative nonfiction, the characters are both real and imagined in their words, thoughts and dreams. The pieces are meditative, and explore marriage, raising children and chronic illness.  The project grew out of Allison's surprise at folks labeling her previous work as "abstract." In response, the pieces draw inspiration and imagery from female abstract artists.

She is also working on an anthology of creative work by queer disabled writers and artists.

Classes

Allison will lead workshops such as Generative Poetry, Introduction to Publishing, Hybrid Writing, and Ekphrasis. Special focus will be placed on engaging, supporting, and developing a network for writers with disabilities.
