Above all, this is a love story. Not your normal boy meets girl but rather a story of middle-age Henry meeting six-year-old Clare, with whom he visits sporadically through her early life until they meet and marry in real time at similar ages. The clever telling switches between Henry, whose part is read by Burns, and Clare, whose role is read by Reed. Each narrator makes the character sound sincere and passionate, which helps listeners believe in the surreal events. Time travel is presented as a disease to be understood and cured. The difficulties caused by the illness, such as a character arriving naked in an unknown time and place, provide drama. The date and the names and ages of the characters in each scene are announced, which helps ground listeners. However, because this is audio, it is not as easy to check back on previous events. In spite of this drawback, this abridged audio presentation of a remarkable first novel is difficult to turn off. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.
