PW Reviews 2000 October #3

Supt. Gil Mayo (Killing Me Softly, etc.) steps aside to allow his inspector, Abigail Moon, to shine in yet another fine Eccles police procedural that should appeal to cozy fans as well. For Mayo, the murder of a young woman in the Midlands town of Lavenstock is personal, as the victim, Kathryn (Kat) Conolly, had been his daughter Julie's best friend since childhood. When Julie disappears, the distraught Mayo takes a compassionate leave and begins his own investigation to find her. Meanwhile, the appointment of the dreaded Glenda Nightingale, brought in to act as temporary superintendent from neighboring Hurstfield, dashes Moon's secret hopes that she'll be chosen to lead the murder case. From the crime scene in the elegant country house/hotel, Freyning Manor, to the small flat of Donna Conolly, Kat's mother, the search for clues leads to a growing suspect list, which is as diverse as the community itself prominent Lavenstock residents Max Fisher, business partner of Kat's father, and MP Maggie Vye; members of Group Six (a local protest group); travel agent Luke Raeburn; and Jamie Conolly, Kat's brother. Sometimes the connections among all these folk are too contrived, but the book will appeal to readers who appreciate an intriguing mystery, interesting subplots and rich characterizations with keen insights into even secondary characters.
