Horn Book Guide Reviews 2019 Spring

After baby Brandon joins the family, Mia must share her room, and it's "twice as fun!" But as Brandon gets bigger, there's "twice the mess." Spirited illustrations soften but don't stifle Mia's emotions. Fed up Mia moves out, eventually settling into a blanket fort by the bookcase...but something--or someone--is missing. The text's light tone and warm pictures portray a loving nontraditional family allowing its members to work through frustrations. Copyright 2019 Horn Book Guide Reviews.

Horn Book Magazine Reviews 2018 #6

"When Mia moved in," her new parents have a room ready for her. Mia, who looks to be of preschool or kindergarten age, adds her own touches to make the room "all mine." After baby Brandon joins the family, Mia has to share her room, and, at first, it's "twice as fun!" But as Brandon gets bigger, so does the clutter. Now it's "twice the mess." Spirited illustrations soften but don't stifle Mia's emotions and help keep the tone light. Fed up, Mia moves out, eventually settling into a blanket fort by the bookcase in the basement. This works for a while, but something—or someone—is missing. Mia's unruffled parents inform her that Brandon has moved out, too; Dad calmly suggests, "Maybe you can still catch him." She does, and together they create a "big…bright…epically fun" space. It's refreshing to find a story featuring a nontraditional family that doesn't focus on differences. Is Mia adopted or a foster child? Is Brandon? We aren't told, and the plot isn't dependent on our knowing. The warm text and pictures portray a loving family that gives its members space to work through frustrations and welcomes them back on the other side. kitty Flynn Copyright 2018 Horn Book Magazine Reviews.
