    • Abstract:
Summary: Cold case detective Lauren Riley wakes up in the hospital certain of two things: she was stabbed and left for dead...and the person who did it was a cop. After being brutally stabbed at her desk late one night, Lauren Riley works her way backwards through the haze to piece together who attacked her and why. A mysterious phone message forces her to enlist the help of a retired lieutenant to track down a witness who is desperate not to be found. As she digs into the Buffalo Police Department's hidden past she uncovers a terrible secret, one a fellow officer would kill to protect. Packed with suspense and featuring a detective who "relentlessly--and with morbid humor--gets the job done" (Booklist), The Murder Bookcontinues a series praised byKirkus Reviewsas "an excellent police procedural combined with a psychological thriller." Praise for A Cold Day in Hell, Book 1 of the Cold Case Investigation series: "Recommend this one to anyone who loves courtroom dramas where lawyers tear into witnesses like pit bulls. And to anyone hot for a police procedural where tired cops make mistakes but slowly, relentlessly--and with morbid humor--get the job done. Redmond delivers both in one package...The real attraction here is a keyhole view into a world that turns our expectations upside down--a world where a bullying, quasi-fascist cop can be the only one with a handle on reality. Keep your eyes on Redmond, a retired cop who knows how to write."--Booklist "Redmond, a recently retired Buffalo PD homicide detective, keeps everything moving nicely in this well-constructed crime novel."--Publishers Weekly "An excellent police procedural combined with a psychological thriller."--Kirkus Reviews "A Cold Day in Hellis a fine first novel and Lauren Riley is cool new addition to the world of PI and cop protagonists. A retired detective, Lissa Marie Redmond gives it to the reader without the sugarcoating and lifts the veil off how the system really works...or doesn't."--Reed Farrel Coleman,New York Timesbestselling author of What You Break "Ex-cop Lissa Redmond has a sure hand with police procedure, which should be no surprise. The joy of A Cold Day in Hellcomes from her equally sure hand with storytelling. This is a welcome new voice on the crime scene."--SJ Rozan, bestselling author of Ghost Hero

When Shane Reese, Lauren Riley's partner on the Buffalo Police Cold Case Homicide Unit, clocks out, she stays late in the darkened office. He's only been gone for minutes when someone attacks her from behind. Two days later, she wakes up in the hospital. She was stabbed, kicked in the head, and left for dead by someone she knows was a cop. She recognized the city-issued boots. When he hears her story, Shane moves into Lauren's house while she's on leave. The two partners go rogue, searching for answers about a case that appeared in the department's murder book, which is now missing. Lauren may have made bad decisions in the past, and a psychopath is watching her, but she and Shane are convinced a dirty cop with a need to hide a cold case is behind the attack. VERDICT Retired police detective Redmond skillfully manipulates the evidence and investigation in this follow-up to A Cold Day in Hell. The disturbing aspects of the story line involving a psychopath will draw in Linda Castillo readers.—Lesa Holstine, Evansville Vanderburgh P.L., IN

At the start of Redmond's gripping second mystery featuring Det. Lauren Reed of the Buffalo (N.Y.) Police Cold Case Homicide unit (after 2018's A Cold Day in Hell), Lauren is working in her office one night when someone stabs her in the back and stomps on her head. Before she loses consciousness, she gets a partial glimpse of the assailant, who's wearing boots and police uniform pants, carrying away her Murder Book, which contains the records of all the unit's cold cases. On Lauren's release from the hospital, Shane Reese, her devoted police partner, vows to unofficially assist in finding the perpetrator, who appears to be a fellow cop. Their only clues: the culprit, who is definitely a man, gained entry by using a stolen swipe card and absconded with the Murder Book after unsuccessfully attempting to enter the file room. As Lauren and Shane delve deeper, the danger increases, as a long-standing conspiracy within the ranks of law enforcement starts unraveling. Fans of contemporary police procedurals will want to see more of the plucky Lauren. Agent: Bob Mecoy, Bob Mecoy Literary. (Feb.)
