Booklist Reviews 2018 November #2

This companion to Laybourne's Berserker (2017) picks up three years after the events of the first book. The narrative bounces between Hanne Hemstad and her fiancé, Owen, who have joined a cattle drive (complete with satisfying descriptions of food prep, cowboy politics, and life on the trail) to make ends meet, and that of Hanne's sister Sissel, who is coming into her independence as a young woman, as well as her unexpected Nyette (power). Sissel thought the ancient powers her siblings possess had skipped her, but it turns out she's a Ransacker—someone who can sense and pull metals from the environment, including gold. This skill quickly gains her the wrong type of attention from locals, potential suitors, and the dark force that is still keeping a close eye on the family. Sissel's struggle with the frustration of not being able to wield her power (and autonomy) the way she'd like makes for a wonderfully flawed and complex heroine. A terrific follow-up to Berserker, full of adventure, magic, and deep family loyalty. Grades 9-12. Copyright 2018 Booklist Reviews.
