Summary: "Coffeehouse owner Maggy Thorsen's dinner with fiancé Sheriff Jake Pavilk's parents takes an unfortunate turn when Jake's mother falls ill. Driving home alone at midnight, Maggy barely avoids a terrified Chihuahua crossing the highway ramp in front of her car. She rescues the pup, intending to return "Mocha" to her owners the next morning. But when Maggy arrives at the Satterwite house, she finds the Satterwite's dog-sitter, Arial -- her partner Sarah's niece -- at the property with what looks like blood on her face. Uneasy, she leaves Mocha but returns with Sarah to find a body on the floor and no sign of Arial or Mocha. With Jake still in Chicago and Sarah desperate to find her niece, Maggy is drawn into yet another deadly puzzle."--Book jacket

Maggy Thorsen, owner of the coffeehouse Uncommon Grounds in Brookhills, Wisconsin, rescues a bedraggled chihuahua on a rainy night, much to the disgust of her Old English sheepdog, Frank. When Maggy contacts George Satterwite, the owner of the chihuahua, whose name is Mocha, she learns that Arial Kingston—the niece of Maggie's business partner, Sarah—is the Satterwites' dogsitter, and when Maggie drops the dog off the next morning, she sees what she believes to be blood on Arial's cheek. Concerned when Sarah can't reach Arial, Maggy and Sarah go to the Satterwites' house, find a dead body in the theater room, and discover that Arial and Mocha have disappeared. With Arial a murder suspect on the run, Mocha reappears at Maggy's house. Plot twists, snippets of coffeehouse culture, and plenty of dogs and dog behavior are integrated nicely with the mystery. This character-rich series will appeal to readers who enjoy Laurien Berenson's Melanie Travis cozies, also featuring a host of canines. Copyright 2018 Booklist Reviews.

PW Reviews 2018 October #4

In Balzo's solid 11th mystery featuring Maggy Thorsen, owner of the Uncommon Grounds coffee shop in Brookhills, Wis. (after 2017's The Importance of Being Urnest), Maggy is driving home from Chicago one evening when she spots a small animal darting across the road. She stops the car, grabs a flashlight, and sets out to find what she fears is a lost puppy. What she discovers is a frightened, flea-ridden chihuahua, whose tag identifies it as Mocha. Maggy texts the number on the tag and reaches the dog sitter, Arial (named after the font, not for Disney mermaid Ariel), who's the niece of Maggy's business partner, Sarah Kingston. On arrival at the home of "Mocha's parents," she's greeted by a nervous and evasive Arial. When Maggy and Sarah later visit the house to check on Arial, there's a dead man lying on the floor and Arial is gone. Fearful that Arial has become a murder suspect, Maggy and Sarah set out to locate Arial and prove her innocence. Balzo relies too much on loquacious Maggy's digressions to pad out the plot, but her stream-of-consciousness rambles on such topics as fashion faux pas, snippy chihuahuas, and infrasound are sure to please series fans.
