    • Abstract:
Summary: "The Complete Prince of Wales Mysteries collects all three of Peter Lovesey's charming and thrilling Bertie adventures in a single volume for the first time. Albert Edward, Prince of Wales--Bertie, as he's known--is the eldest son of Queen Victoria and future King Edward VII. Bertie is a pleasure seeker, always searching out the best meals, the most beautiful women, and the most lavish parties. As Prince Regent, Bertie is expected to behave like a proper royal and avoid scandal. Instead, his love of excitement leads him to a decidedly unprincely hobby: sleuthing. Bertie is not the best detective, but that does not stop him from trying to solve every case that crosses his path, including the feverish suicide of the greatest jockey of the century, the mysterious death of a member of the royal hunting party, and the murder of the son-in-law of an old friend"-- Provided by publisher.

Booklist Reviews 2019 March #1

*Starred Review* The Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII, observes a butler bowing so low that he breaks wind. A hazard of bowing, the prince muses, "As anyone who has attended an investiture will know." This is the prince—"Bertie," to himself and his friends—in the hands of crime-fiction master Lovesey. This omnibus collection brings together three novels starring Bertie as an amateur sleuth, written in the 1980s and ‘90s and all featuring sparky writing, masterful plotting, and fall-off-your-barstool hilarity. Lovesey's prince is likable and well-intentioned, boastfully analyzing evidence and getting it wrong, attempting Holmesian fireworks and getting those wrong, too. The first of the three, Bertie and the Tinman, will work fine for racetrack habitués, but Bertie and Lovesey really find their voices in Bertie and the Seven Bodies, an audacious spin on Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None, wherein we learn what the upper classes think of us. The grand finale, Bertie and the Crime of Passion, demonstrates what can happen to one who interferes with an arranged marriage. "Marrying for love," someone says as the corpses accumulate, "is a luxury for the lower classes." Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.
