Booklist Reviews 2018 April #2

There have been too many funerals lately in the town of Cross Creek. First, it was popular academic superstars June Phelan-Park and Dayton Nesseth, who died in an apparent pact—their bodies were found hanging in the park. But then Mila's best friend, Riley, turns up dead as well, her body floating in the creek. The town thinks the deaths are all connected, but Mila and Riley's interest in Wicca meant they were each other's only friends, and they certainly weren't involved with the popular crowd. Devastated and determined to figure out the truth about Riley's death, Mila finds a spell—true dark magic—and brings Riley back to life for seven days. Only June and Dayton come too. None of them remember dying, but they're all decomposing fast, and Mila's running out of time to solve what she's now sure was their murders. Mila, teased for her weight, brown skin, and Wiccan practices, is tough as nails, even when she's grieving. A compelling mystery, a grimly funny fantasy, and a genuinely touching story of friendship.
