    • Abstract:
Summary: The world is balanced on the edge of a knife, and war is almost certain between the empire and the Phoenix Riders. Veronyka finally got her wish to join the Riders, but while she's supposed to be in training, all she really wants to do is fly out to defend the villages of Pyra from the advancing empire. Tristan has been promoted to Master Rider, but he has very different ideas about the best way to protect their people than his father, the commander. Sev has been sent to spy on the empire, but maintaining his cover may force him to fight on the wrong side of the war. And Veronyka's sister, Val, is determined to regain the empire she lost--even if it means inciting the war herself. As tensions reach a boiling point, the characters all find themselves drawn together into a fight that will shape the course of the empire--and determine the future of the Phoenix Riders. Each must decide how far they're willing to go--and what they're willing to lose in the process.

Veronyka, a fierce phoenix rider, has been revealed as a girl, but she is miraculously allowed to remain at the male-only Eyrie training camp. Being the only female phoenix rider is hard enough, but she's also dealing with a smoldering attraction to Master Rider Tristan, and shadow magic that seems to make her telepathic when she doesn't keep her guard up. Meanwhile, Avalkyra, a mysterious figure also able to ride phoenixes and command shadow magic, tells a tale rooted in the history of the Ashfire clan. How she, Veronyka, and Veronyka's estranged sister, Val, all fit together remains unclear, but as details are revealed, the already elaborate story becomes more twisted. As in the first book, Crown of Feathers (2019), this novel has multiple narrators: Veronyka, of course, but also Tristan and Sev from the previous outing and new characters Avalkyra and Elliot. There's a lot going on in this sequel, and it's no quick read, so be sure to have the first on hand for the most dedicated fantasy readers. Grades 9-12. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.
