In the years since its opening in 2004, Blair Library has been a leader in facilitating the new ways people use their public library. Thanks to the generous support from our community, Fayetteville and Northwest Arkansas families have enjoyed a facility that goes well beyond a repository for books.
Opened to the public in January of 2021, the expanded FPL redefines the traditional public library model, providing education, services, and out-of-the-box programs for all ages. The 100,000 square-foot expansion began in 2018 with a total project budget of $49.9 million. A temporary millage increase in 2016 generated $26.9 million towards the project, leaving us $23 million left to privately raise through the Beyond Words Capital Campaign. Though the building is now open to the public, capital fundraising for the project continues.
The expanded FPL has introduced a whole new world of possibilities through public spaces like the Center for Innovation, Art & Movement Room, Event Center, and Teaching Kitchen. Now, more than ever, you can do so much more than borrow from your public library--you can create, experience, and develop skills that will help you achieve your goals. Spaces and programs to support entrepreneurship and workforce development in STEAM fields, culinary arts, trucking, construction, aviation, and more are all available at zero cost. The 700-seat Event Center provides a community hub for medium to large-scale events and provides consistent entertainment and cultural experiences for all ages, including author talks, theatrical performances, dance, concerts, movies, expos, and more.
