Poetry Rx is a 90-minute generative workshop focused on wellness presented by Elizabeth Muscari.

Together, we'll explore how embodied and kinesthetic practices can enliven our writing. Drawing on poets like Lucille Clifton, Ross Gay, Ada Limón, William Carlos Williams, among others, we will consider how poets use form, imagery, and language to discuss the body, health, illness, and other themes.

In addition, we’ll learn about interdisciplinary artists who invite movement as part of their generative process—from the physical rigor and swimming-inspired movement of modern dance pioneer Paul Taylor and the durational, body-based drawing practice of visual artist Tony Orrico. Participants will experiment with gentle movement exercises, breathwork, and mindfulness as generative tools.

Writing prompts and dedicated writing time will invite us to approach the body as an archive, memory-keeper, and a positive force, and we'll practice poetic techniques that promote wellness within ourselves and our communities. This workshop welcomes all experience levels; some poems may contain mature topics. There will be time for optional sharing at the end, though participants may also refrain and observe during that time. Some light movement will be involved; however, it can be done while standing, sitting, etc. and does not require specific clothing.

This workshop is part of our new annual Writers Weekend series for adults interested in writing and publishing their work, including poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and journalistic writing of all lengths and styles. Join us to sharpen your skills, connect with fellow writers, and take the next step toward publication!
