Fayetteville Public Library proudly presents an Afternoon with the Composer featuring the great Giuseppe Verdi. This second in a series of three lecture recitals offers excerpts from his operas La Traviata and Rigoletto, as well as an interview with Verdi.
Dr. Hyun Kim will perform alongside Theodore Rulfs and gifted singers from Arkansas. This multimedia musical event offers aficionados and novices an inspiring view into the world of opera and music.
Performers:
Dr. Hyun Kim is a pianist, vocal coach, conductor, and educator who regularly collaborates with prominent orchestras, chamber ensembles, opera companies, and music festivals throughout the United States, South America, Asia, and Europe. Kim has taught at Miami University, Metropolitan State University, and University of Colorado Boulder. Currently, Dr. Kim is a music professor at the University of Arkansas and the music director of UA opera. She recently conducted Hansel and Gretel, Speed Dating Tonight, and Signore Deluso. Her opera credits include Aspen Music Festival, Tanglewood Music Festival, Cincinnati Opera, Central City Opera, Kentucky Opera, Opera Colorado, Seattle Opera, Bayview Opera, Sarasota Opera, Boulder Opera, Soo Opera, Korea National Opera, and Lucca Opera Festival in Italy.
Juilliard-trained opera singer, actor, and director Theodore Rulfs enjoyed studies with Alberta Masiello and Luciano Pavarotti in New York. He had interpretation classes at the Rome Academy in Italy with Giuseppe Di Stefano. Rulfs has appeared in title roles such as Verdi’s Rigoletto, Falstaff, and Macbeth, as well as the baritone leads in Un Ballo in Maschera, Il Trovatore, La Traviata, and Otello in theaters across Europe, including the German National Theaters in Mannheim and Weimar, Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich, and the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. He has also featured in the works of Bellini, Donizetti, Rossini, Giordano, and Leoncavallo in numerous Italian opera performances throughout Europe and the United States.
