What is the Summer Reading Club?

The Summer Reading Club (SRC) is our way of encouraging kids and families to read together all summer long – June 1st through July 31st – in whatever form they can! It could be audiobooks, eBooks, physical books, graphic novels, picture books, chapter books – we love them all!

When you are a part of SRC, you log the minutes (or for adults, the number of books) you read.  You earn points for all of the reading you do.  Earning points means you are entered in our drawings for prizes at the end of the summer.  The more you read, the more entries you earn, and the more chances you have to win!

What is READsquared?

READsquared is a program you can use to track your reading. Instead of paper logs, you can track online or through the READsquared app (iOS or Android).  In this program, you earn points for all of the reading you complete, and that enters you in drawings for grand prizes.

How many books do I need to read to win a prize?

For listeners, kids and teens, you do not need to read a certain amount of books – instead, we track minutes spent reading. Each reader is trying to reach 1,000 points.  This may seem daunting, but if you read only 20 minutes a day, you would have 1,000 points in 7 weeks!   You can also earn points by completing missions within the READsquared app – each mission is geared toward a specific age group and is activity oriented.

For each book adults read, they receive an entry into our prize drawing!

My child loves your prizes – are you giving away prizes this year?

We love giving away prizes, too, and we usually do that with generous donations from area businesses!  This year will look a little different.  We will give all of our prizes away at the end of the summer.  For each 100 points that you earn, you will be entered into our grand prize drawings.  Finishing the program (1,000 points) and completing missions within READsquared will earn extra entries into the drawings.

Our prizes this year will include passes to local places like Modern Mission, Lokomotion, Altitude, Gator Golf, and Arcadia.  They will also include gift cards to local retailers and eateries.  We will be giving away prizes in each reading program (listeners, kids, and teens) and there will be many prizes given away within each age category.

What if my child doesn’t read yet?

We have a program for Listeners, which is generally kids 0-5.  Any book that is read to them counts as a book that can be logged for them!

What if my child reads on their own but I also read to them? Does that count?

Yes!  In the kid’s program, you can log books your child reads themselves and books that you read to them.  You can also log minutes for multiple children simultaneously.

My child usually wins a free book; are you giving away books?

Yes! For children who register in the program, we will have a registration gift that can be picked up all summer long, while supplies last.  This gift is an FPL bag and a book based on their grade level.  We also have a limited amount of t-shirts we are giving away.  This is for ages 10 and under only.  Kids ages 11-18 are eligible to receive the free FPL bag.

Can I print a reading log?

The READsquared app is taking the place of all of our paper logs.  You can log your reading online or through the app.  You can even log the same reading for multiple kids at once!  If you need special assistance participating in the Summer Reading Club this year, we will try to help. Just contact us at kidsquestions@faylib.org or call 479.856.7170.

Can my kids volunteer at the library?

7-Ups, our volunteer program for rising 7th graders is one of our most popular summer programs!  We won’t be able to allow kids to volunteer at the library this summer, but we plan to open next year’s 7-Up program to rising 7th and 8th graders, so this year’s kids can still participate if they’d like to.

What about programs?

For the safety of our community and staff, all of our programs will be online.  For a schedule, check out our web calendar or Facebook.  The program line-up for the summer includes performances by some FPL favorites, crafts, workshops, demonstrations, ideas for family fun and story times!  Many of our programs will include ideas, challenges, and inspiration for getting your kids away from screens.  Some programs will require registration, but most can be watched on your own time, even though they will be posted at set times. We hope you will connect with us virtually this summer!
