Zero Garbage Challenge Presentation

Join Rose Brown as she describes why and how she began the Zero Garbage Challenge in 2009. Rose will describe some of her sustainability projects and her zero garbage tips, including:

City of Fayetteville Waste Diversion Presentation
Faebyan Whittle will discuss the City of Fayetteville's many programs and services which help to divert waste from the landfill, including its recycling, food waste diversion, and composting programs.
Boston Mt. Solid Waste District Presentation
Justin Taylor will share about the services that BMSWD provides for Northwest Arkansas, and will focus primarily on what qualifies as Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and what options exist for proper disposal in our area.
Alternative Avenues for Reusing and Recycling Materials
Liz Hill will describe the various alternative locations and methods of recycling and reusing a variety of materials that are not typically recycled in municipal programs. She will provide information on where to donate and drop off items, such as “random plastics,” packing materials, electronics, building materials, and more.
About the Speakers
Rose Brown has been living without garbage since 2009 when she founded the Zero Garbage Challenge. She provides information, workshops and presentations to the community about household waste reduction and other sustainability topics. She has worked for a number of environmental organizations, including StreamWatch and The Nature Conservancy, and she is a volunteer Master Naturalist. She currently works as the Executive Director at Ozark Natural Science Center.
Faebyan Whittle is an Environmental Educator for the City of Fayetteville Recycling and Trash Collection Department. With over two decades of experience in sustainable materials management, she has worked with several private and public entities to find a way to translate what looks like "trash" into a valuable sustainable material, providing both economic and environmental benefits for waste reduction, recovery, and diversion. She worked in the outdoor industry prior to joining the City team as the Director of Sustainability for Pack Rat Outdoor Center, helping them become the "Greenest Outdoor Shop in America".
Justin Taylor is an Environmental Educator with the Boston Mountain Solid Waste District. He works with schools, businesses and other organizations throughout Washington and Madison counties to reduce waste through reuse, recycling, composting and smart sourcing.
Liz Hill is the Education and Community Program Manager for Ozark Natural Science Center. In addition to her passion for outdoor and science education, she has a special love for Creative Reuse Art and EcoArt. Liz has also worked in numerous environmental education positions focused on waste reduction, including with the City of Fayetteville, Washington County Environmental Affairs Office, Marin Conservation Corps, and more.
