Join us for a creative writing workshop designed for scientists, healthcare professionals, and researchers who want to explore fiction rooted in personal experience.
Many people in science and medicine carry powerful lived experiences — moments of insight, conflict, wonder, and ethical complexity — but translating that experience into fiction can feel daunting. In this intensive workshop, participants will learn how to draw on their professional lives to generate compelling narratives using the tools of autofiction and imaginative storytelling.
We’ll explore ethical fictionalization, narrative voice, structure, and how to balance scientific detail with emotional depth. Through a mix of guided writing, discussion, and example texts, attendees will leave with new work-in-progress and a deeper understanding of how lived knowledge can fuel creative writing.
No prior writing experience is required. Open to adults 18+ with a background in any scientific or clinical field. Registration is required.
Miah O'Malley is a fiction writer, workshop instructor, and registered nurse with over a decade of experience in clinical settings. She holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing, where she focused on science-informed fiction and narrative structure. Her background in nursing and pharmacology directly informs her fiction, which explores intersections between medicine, memory, and speculative futures. She was selected for AWP’s Writer to Writer program and has work forthcoming in Exposed Bone, the Graveside Press anthology Witchcraft, Tethered Literary Journal, and Hyphen Punk.
