Fayetteville native and Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Kathleen DuVal will join KUAF's Kyle Kellams for a discussion about her book, "Native Nations: A Millennium in North America."
DuVal will discuss the histories of early America’s marginalized voices, recounting untold stories from the American Revolution and centering Indigenous nations in our retelling of North American History.
Joining this conversation is KUAF News Director and host of Ozarks at Large, Kyle Kellams. Pearl's Books will be selling books at the event, and a book signing will follow the program.
Native Nations explores the history and enduring sovereignty of Indigenous American civilizations over a thousand years, highlighting their adaptability, resilience, and influence before and after European colonization. DuVal illustrates how the definitions of power and methods of exerting it evolved over time, though the influence of Native peoples remained steadfast and will continue to persist in the future. Native Nations is also the winner of The Bancroft Prize, The Cundill History Prize, and the Mark Lynton History Prize.
The Pulitzer Prize Board called DuVal’s book “a panoramic portrait of Native American nations and communities over a thousand years, a vivid and accessible account of their endurance, ingenuity and achievement in the face of conflict and dispossession.” The Wall Street Journal called Native Nations “an essential American history.”
A graduate of Fayetteville High School, DuVal studied at Stanford University and the University of California-Davis, where she earned a doctorate. DuVal is professor of history at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her books include Native Nations: A Millennium in North America, Independence Lost: Lives on the Edge of the American Revolution, The Native Ground: Indians and Colonists in the Heart of the Continent, Interpreting a Continent: Voices from Colonial America, and Foundations of American Democracy.
