About the speakers
Following a career as a high school social studies teacher, Kitty Sanders spent 14 years as a BGO volunteer and spent much of her time learning about native butterflies, their habitat needs, their life cycles, and how to share this information with young and old. She has found that gardening for butterflies provides benefits for many other pollinators and other wildlife. Kitty finds it thrilling to see children observe and become fascinated with the natural world (Adults, too). Kitty has led the wonderful Butterfly Education Team at the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks which was chosen by the Arkansas State Master Gardener program to be the winner of the Excellence in Education Award for 2024. This group not only educates visitors to the Garden, but also takes road trips for Girl Scout functions, Garden Club meetings, insect festivals, and school programs.
Kathy Launder is a lifetime Master Gardener. She has volunteered at the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks since 2007 and is currently the Master Gardener chairman for the Sensory Garden. Assisting with butterfly house tours, butterfly days, school tours, and educating the public regarding nectar plants, native plants, and host plants for the butterflies native to Arkansas are just a few ways Kathy has served as a volunteer at BGO.
