Join us to view and discuss the short documentary "Seed Savers: Janisse Ray Visits Ira Wallace" by Ethan Payne.
In this film, seed saver Ira Wallace and environmental writer Janisse Ray talk climate change, plants and Southern environments.
Following the film viewing, Master Naturalist Rose Gergerich will discuss the collection and treatment of seeds for growing native plants. Topics covered will include collection and storage of seed, seed treatments, seedling transplanting, types of soil mixes, and efforts to use recycled materials in the plant production process.
Rose Gergerich grew up on a dairy farm in northern Wisconsin where she learned to grow and appreciate plants from her parents and grandparents. She is retired from the University of Arkansas after a 30-year career as a professor in the Department of Plant Pathology with a specialization in plant virology. She now lives out in the boondocks in southern Washington County. She is an active member of the Northwest Arkansas Master Naturalists Chapter and she helped to form the Native Plant Team in that chapter. She enjoys working with fellow Master Naturalists in the greenhouse and nursery on her property where the Master Naturalists propagate native plants for distribution in Northwest Arkansas.
