Just like that childhood song that is now playing in your head, puff pastry is an enduring classic.
- Puff (the dragon): Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul and Mary fame) was inspired by a poem his roommate Leonard Lipton wrote in 1959. He set the poem to music and the song is still recognized worldwide. Lipton wrote the poem after being inspired by a poem by Ogden Nash called The Tale of Custard the Dragon.
- Puff (the pastry): Developed by French pastry apprentice, Claudius Gelée in 1645. He accidentally created the dough when cooking for his sick father, who was on a diet of flour, butter and water. Gelée added butter to the dough and folded it several times. Expecting a failure, instead he invented the basis for the still famous puff pastry.
