Join us for a lecture by Raven Cook on Visual Black Political Literacies, examining how Black artists have used visual art elements and principles for community engagement and political mobilization. This presentation will introduce traditional folk art methods and highlight key artists from the 20th century, as well as the artists' collective AfriCOBRA.
Raven Cook is a graduate student at the University of Arkansas with a background in visual arts engagement. She has previously spoken at the Clinton School of Public Policy, was a participant in the Studio Museum of Harlem 2021 Cohort, and was the first award recipient for Excellence in the Arts from the Northwest Arkansas Black Action Collective. She also hosted the radio segment "Reflections in Black" on KUAF 91.3 Public Radio and created a podcast called Beyond the Veil: Considering the Work of Black American Artists.
