True Lit: Distinguished Reader, Maggie Smith

Join us for an evening with poet Maggie Smith.

Maggie Smith is the author of "Good Bones", "The Well Speaks of Its Own Poison", "Lamp of the Body" and the national bestseller "Keep Moving: Notes on Loss, Creativity, and Change". Her latest collection of poems, "Goldenrod", was released in July 2021. Smith’s poems and essays are widely published and anthologized, appearing in "Best American Poetry", "The New York Times", "The New Yorker", "The Paris Review", "Ploughshares", "The Washington Post", "The Guardian" and elsewhere. In 2016 her poem “Good Bones” went viral internationally and has been translated into nearly a dozen languages. Public Radio International called it “the official poem of 2016.”

For 50 years, the Program in Creative Writing and Translation at the University of Arkansas has served as a training ground for some of the nation’s best writers. It ranks in the top 40 MFA programs nationwide, according to Poets & Writers magazine. The Atlantic Monthly named it among the “Top Five Most Innovative” MFA programs in the country.

This event is part of the True Lit: Literary Festival, a partnership with Fayetteville Public Library, the Program in Creative Writing and Translation at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville Public Schools, Fayetteville Public Education Foundation, Walton Arts Center, Altrusa and Ozark Literacy Council. Due to extenuating circumstances, True Lit events will be featured throughout 2021/22.
